FROM KNOW TO IMPACT: A CALL TO RETHINK EDUCATION

I want to present an idea, but first, I invite you to take a moment to reflect on our education system. Picture a young person, fresh out of school, and consider the expectations we all have for them. We hope they step into the world equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate life's challenges. Yet, too often, it feels as if they emerge with little more than a piece of paper—certificates that seem irrelevant to real-world demands. This thought led me on a journey of reflection, especially within my own field of biology education. I found myself grappling with critical inquiries: What real-world problems can I address with my understanding of biology? What practical skills am I truly gaining from my studies? Unfortunately, I discovered that my training centered on imparting knowledge that has been handed down through generations, rather than fostering the ability to innovate or create opportunities for myself and future generations. So, I pose this question to you: Are we truly prepared to step into the world, or are we merely reciting what has been taught, without thinking critically about how we can effect meaningful change?
